The Journey Begins

After 12 fantastic years at MCFC, I have now taken the some may say brave decision to move on to the next chapter in my coaching career. On reflection the interactions and experiences with various people over the last 12 months has had a profound effect on me and have shaped the person I am today. These notes are written on the back of spending time with my mentor Brian Ashton MBE, his close friend Kevin Roberts (executive chairman Saatchi & Saatchi) and Ray Kelvin, owner and CEO of Ted Baker.

My objective now is to take the step up into the professional phase of world football.

world for many yet with the right people and mindset could be …

Crazy (at times) and

This is what Kevin Roberts describes as the difference between a VUCA world and a SUPER VUCA world.

The job of the coach is to create the latter for both players and staff. Brian Ashton talks about achieving this by adopting an ABC mindset and approach. Ambition, belief and courage, three traits that I am now looking for in an owner, a director, or a CEO who wants to do things differently.

My Teams

My teams need to have a relentless tempo, a high level of accuracy and tactical innovation. Creativity must exist in the game and be executed by technically gifted independent decision making winners. We will have an objective, strategy and tactics for every game, which will come from a mix of deep thought, common sense and logic.

Ray Kelvin like Kevin Roberts also believes it is about people, regards coaching knowing the person rather than just the player in my opinion is key. Communication must be constant and consistent, we must all speak the same language.

And, finally the purpose, how your personal purpose fits with the overall purpose of the club.

I know my next opportunity is out there the exciting thing now is finding it.

I would like to finish with the following quote “What you leave behind is not what’s engraved on stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others”
